The Royal Irish Academy of Music approached IADT’s Costumes Design and Visual Communication Design courses to  create costume and promotional materials for their  performance of Cendrillon, a Cinderella opera first written by Pauline Viardot.

To create a visual language for this opera I took cues from both the magical story and the costumes, which merged both modern clothing and more classic ‘fairytale’ materials such as glittery tulle.

The main image depicts the infamous moment that Cendrillon’s shoe slips off as she leaves the ball, allowing the viewer to connect with the story even if they don’t know the French name or don’t usually watch Opera.
The colours and dream-like image treatment lull us into nostalgia for the fairytales of our childhood and reverie for the dark dancefloors of our young adulthood; both experiences infused with costume, song, gender, movement and romance.

More from this project coming soon!
